Pool Deck Problems
We’ve identified several problems present on the client’s deck.
Firstly, the existing decking material in the picture is made out of natural timber decking material, possibly chengal solid wood.
As observed in the pictures, the swimming pool deck appears to be undulating and damaged. This type of damage is dangerous because it can pose a hazard not only to the home owners, but also to anyone who uses the pool.
There are a variety of different factors as to how this wood deck became damaged. Pool decks typically have the same reasoning behind the damage.
Firstly, there is a very high possibility of the surface decking area not being maintained frequently. Young chengal timber, that is not treated or kiln dried properly, can only last about 9 years under severe environmental conditions.
Even then, that estimate is for the right chengal wood materials are from credible vendors.
We can see that it’s not being maintained properly from the fact that there are a lot of splintered and cracked areas in the swimming pool decking.
Secondly, the base of the pool deck construction was not prepared properly. Beneath the swimming pool decking we can observe that there is some soil settlement underneath.
In addition, there are plant roots and growth that caused some of the pool decking joists to be dislodged and shifted. The prior swimming pool deck construction did not account for plant growth from the ground.
Furthermore, there are some water ponding issues caused by the accumulated leaves of the nearby plants that can cause the joists of the wood deck to rot.
We took all these problems and made a few considerations in how we were going to solve them.
Pool Decking Considerations
The course of action that we contemplated taking were between refurbishing the current wood deck or to install a new pool decking with a different pool deck material.
Between the two options, we have concluded that installing new decking would be more beneficial because it is more cost effective, as it requires less maintenance and less effort for replacement.
Also, over time, a new swimming pool deck would make it easier on the deck owner, as they would need to spend less time checking for maintenance.
A new deck can also prevent many other issues from happening, such as root barrier prevention for the plants, and a more solid foundation with more stable concrete stumps and base.
It can also avoid issues like water discharge.
We also wanted to install access panels so that the client can check or maintain the decking as required.
Pool Decking Solutions
So, our solution was to replace the existing damaged deck with new composite decking so that the pool area will be more even and the installation will be more streamlined.
We did so by installing root barriers around the base of the existing plants to prevent root incursion.
We also prepared the subbase and installed concrete stumps, and made sure to plan and prepare for effective water discharge beneath the decking for effective water discharge underneath the pool decking.

Whilst refurbishing the current wood decking may have short term benefits like saving cost, and take a shorter time to refurbish. The long term benefits outweigh the short term benefits.
Compared to the Chengal wood, the composite wood decking requires lesser maintenance except to clean it to your own comfort.
