Artificial Turf, also called Artificial Grass, Synthetic Turf, Fake Grass, or even Astroturf by some, can be used on lots of places like balconies, roof tops, gardens, restaurants, retail shops, condominiums, offices and shopping malls. Other than being aesthetically pleasing and soothing to eyes (tired out by endless hours on our smart phones), artificial grass also has these benefits:
1. Lower Water Bills
With Singapore being a water-scarce country, using less water for grass is a real benefit not just for our individual households, but for the country as well. Artificial grass does not require any watering (but of course you can wash it if it’s dirty), and will save you a lot on your water bill.
2. All-year Greenery
Synthetic turf is green all year round. The intense amounts of sunlight, and rainwater from thunderstorms are actually serious grass killers. That’s why natural grass fields look brownish most of the time, unless lots of money and effort are put in to maintaining the grass. Whereas for artificial grass, virtually no maintenance is needed.
3. Pet-Friendly
When our pets pass urine or poo to mark their territory, that patch of natural grass is sure to die. Sad, but true. But with artificial grass, this doesn’t happen. It stays just as pretty, and doesn’t retain any bad smell after you wash it with water. That means your balcony, roof top or garden is always in tip-top condition for your family and loved ones to enjoy, or even to entertain in.

In our efforts to make real grass thrive and look nice, we sometimes use lots of pesticides and fertilizers. All these chemicals run off into our sewage system and contaminate our environment. With artificial grass, there’s just no need to use such harmful chemicals, so you’re also doing your part for the environment.

Did you know that artificial turf helps to cushion the floor and is easy on our joints? As compared to tiles or decking, walking on artificial grass feels like you’re walking on a carpet. If you find that you have any pain in your knees, you may want to consider using artificial grass in your outdoor renovation. Also, remember to apply your glucosamine cream regularly. (Now you know I obviously have this condition too…)
- Built to Last
The artificial grass that Absolut Outdoors uses is from GreenTurf. They are initially made for sports usage. This means that they are built to withstand the rigors of intense usage and can last you for ten years or more at home.
Now with all these benefits of artificial turf I just listed, you may ask: “What are the disadvantages of artificial grass?”
Well, obviously, the cost is a set back. It costs more to lay your balcony or roof top with artificial grass than leaving it bare with tiles or natural grass. But if you weigh out the benefits above, you’ll find that it’s a worthwhile investment.
It also does get a bit hot during high noon. But I expect that you probably won’t be spending much time on your outdoors anyway, during noon time.
Some people also think that artificial grass is hard to maintain, but that can’t be further from the reality. You can vacuum and wash artificial turf just like any self-respecting flooring.
